Internet n’est pas le royaume des programmeurs, des ingénieurs et des financiers !Le rôle de l’écriture dans l’univers numérique est dramatiquement sous-estimé et sous-évalué. Et pourtant, l’économie digitale repose presque exclusivement sur le contenu.

Lorsque l'on parle d'économie digitale, de transformation numérique, ou encore de web marketing, on oublie souvent d'y intégrer une notion : le contenu. Alors qu'on s'extasie sur la technologie, on oublie de prendre en compte le rôle de l'histoire, du copywriting, dans l'économie sur la toile. Mathias Savary revient sur la force de l'écrit dans l'économie numérique, et l'importance de ne pas passer à côté.

Un aveuglement collectif, qualité du contenu.

Dans le world wide web, comment se font les rencontres ? Ce n’est pas votre allure ou votre style vestimentaire qui compte. Le premier contact, la première impression, se fait à partir des mots qui habillent votre message.

“On voit bien que dans le marketing digital, il y a souvent un thème qui est mis de côté, malheureusement, c’est l’écriture. Alors qu’au final, c’est la première chose que les gens voient.” Alexandre Dana, CEO de l’école LiveMentor.

Entre l’enseignement des matrices stratégiques et comment faire une étude de cas, l’écriture pour le web passe à l’as. Pas important ! Elle est pourtant omniprésente.

“Avant même de regarder les images de votre site, avant même de regarder les vidéos, avant de regarder les prix, [les gens] vont lire tout simplement ce qui est marqué sur votre site, ce qui est marqué dans votre newsletter, sur votre blog, dans la description de votre application mobile….” poursuit Alexandre Dana.

La conséquence de cette omission, c’est l’uniformisation du discours marketing. Pourquoi croyez-vous que vous êtes capable de reconnaître une pub au premier coup d’œil ? Qu’elle soit dans votre boîte aux lettres ou dans votre inbox ? Parce que ce sont toutes les mêmes ! A peu de choses près, les newsletters, les bannières, les spots de pubs sont faits sur un modèle sans âme, issus d’un autre âge : la consommation de masse à l’ère industrielle.

Le rôle de l’écriture dans l’univers numérique est dramatiquement sous-estimé et sous-évalué. Et pourtant, l’économie digitale repose presque exclusivement sur le contenu.

Google aime la littérature

“Presque exclusivement” ? Je fais un bref rappel sur le fonctionnement du SEO (Search Engine Optimization ou référencement naturel). Comment Google évalue les pages d’un site web ? Il ne se borne pas à l’examen des mots clés. Il utilise d’autres critères comme :

1/ le nombre de liens externes (ou backlinks)

Il s’agit du nombre de sites qui renvoient – en mettant un lien dit “externe” – vers une page, un article de blog ou une vidéo. Mais comment obtenez-vous un backlink ? Il faut que votre contenu soit de qualité : bien documenté, bien structuré et bien écrit. Bien sûr, il doit être pertinent.

2/ le temps passé sur une page

Le postulat de Google (et de ses programmes qui parcourent le web), c’est que plus une personne reste sur une page, plus le contenu de celle-ci doit être pertinent et intéressant.

Un internaute qui passe du temps sur une page puis qui, grâce aux liens internes, consulte d’autres pages d’un site web, envoie un meilleur signal que le visiteur qui quitte immédiatement une page après un bref coup d’œil. Là encore : qualité du contenu.

3/ la longueur du texte

En 2016, Brian Dean – une pointure dans le SEO – a fait une expérience. Il a analysé 1 million de résultats de recherches Google. Il a publié les résultats sur https://backlinko.com/. Il en conclut notamment que :

  • Plus le contenu est long, mieux il se positionne. Les pages les mieux classées ont plus de 1 890 mots. Mieux vaut être inspiré.
  • Mettre une image, donne de meilleurs résultats qu’aucune image MAIS plus d’une n’ajoute rien en termes de performance.

En clair, cela veut dire qu’il faut écrire et même écrire beaucoup pour être bien référencé par Google. Pourquoi ? Parce que c’est ce que les gens aiment ! 

Attendez une minute. On parle de qualité du “contenu”. Mais qu’est-ce qui se cache derrière ce terme pudique ? Les gars, le contenu, c’est l’écrit !!! Et les maîtres de l’écriture, ce sont les écrivains. Dans la sphère du digital, on parle plutôt des copywriters ou des storytellers. Les raconteurs d’histoire.

Eh bien, Google aime ces gens-là. Pardon : les internautes (!) les aiment, alors Google les met en avant dans les premiers résultats de recherches.

Ah ! Donc l’écriture ce n’est pas (que) du divertissement et des beaux mensonges ?

Petite mise au point sur le storytelling

Définition de storytelling : ce sont des techniques d’écritures. Elles permettent de révéler et de raconter l’histoire ou les histoires vraies autour d’un produit, d’une entreprise ou d’une personne.

En France, il y a quelqu’un qui a écrit tout un livre pour expliquer qu’en fait le storytelling, c’est de la manipulation.

Vous voulez dire que toutes les autres techniques de marketing, c’est de l’information fraîche et pure ? Les blondes pulpeuses, le recours à des autorités (comme les médecins), l’utilisation de célébrités, ce n’est pas de la manipulation ?

Le fait qu’il n’existe pas de traduction du terme “storytelling” souligne une atroce réalité. Nous avons complètement laissé les Américains poser les bases de l’écriture sur le web ! Parce qu’en France, on a longtemps pensé que le contenu n’était pas important. Mais c’est en train de changer.

Les convaincus du Storytelling : les conteurs modernes

“Je m’appelle Jérémy Kohlmann, et je suis un Conteur Moderne ». Quand j’annonce cela, fièrement, chez un nouveau client ou dans un événement networking, on me regarde toujours avec de grands yeux.

– Et ça se manifeste comment ?

– Je suis raconteur d’histoires, mais professionnel !

– Well, cet homme est un génie incompris ou un gros débile.

Le propos est simple : ce qui nous lie en tant qu’humain, ce sont les histoires que nous nous racontons.

Le marketing est la mise en lumière de l’histoire, le social media est un nouveau lieu avec de nouveaux codes pour les raconter, et l’e-commerce est une grande histoire bien positionnée avec plein de petites histoires dedans.

Tout n’est que discours, image, texte – on se raconte des choses.

Dans la vraie vie, je suis blogueur, coach en comm digitale et j’accompagne souvent des entrepreneurs, des dirigeants, des entreprises, à une prise de parole plus juste sur les réseaux sociaux, dans les blogs, etc. Ce qui me marque le plus souvent, est la méconnaissance de la façon de délivrer un message. On a simplement oublié, comme si on pouvait vendre n’importe quoi sur Internet.

C’est là que m’est venue l’idée des Conteurs Modernes. Des personnes qui se réunissent autour d’un blog, et qui parlent de belles histoires – sans se voiler la face. Les histoires sont souvent là pour vendre, utilisons les mots à bon escient, tout le monde peut l’apprendre.

Je me souviens d’une cliente qui, après qu’on ait mis son histoire en forme, pour la diffuser plus largement, m’a dit : “Ah mais en fait, tu rentres dans la tête des gens et tu mets en lumière ce qu’ils veulent dire, comme ils ne savent pas comment le faire…”

C’est toujours un choc la première fois, quand on met les mots justes et dans le bon ordre.

Je me bats quotidiennement pour que le storytelling soit connu, reconnu et que l’on comprenne que l’on n’est pas obligé de parler d’Inbound Marketing ou de Storytelling de marque, ou encore de Brand Content, pour raconter de belles histoires qui donnent envie et qui font demain, un marketing et une publicité un peu plus humains.”

Le hold up des littéraires sur l'économie digitale

Quand je parle des littéraires, je ne veux pas dire strictement “ceux qui ont suivi un cursus de lettres ». Je parle de tous ceux qui produisent du contenu (y compris du contenu vidéo qui est toujours scénarisé, écrit, en premier lieu).

Internet est le royaume des blogueurs, des youtubeurs, des instagrameurs… ceux qu’on appelle “les influenceurs”.

Ce qui prouve qu’ils sont devenus les maîtres, c’est que les marques essaient de les copier pour vendre leurs produits et leurs services. On appelle ça le social selling.

L’autre preuve, c’est que les GAFA (Google Apple Facebook Amazon) les courtisent et veulent absolument les avoir. Car le nouveau Saint Graal, c’est l’engagement.

Par exemple, sur Tao-Bao, un des principaux sites de ventes en ligne en Chine, les influenceurs ont leurs marques. Or, sur les 30 marques beauté/mode, 7 des plus importantes marques étaient celles d’influenceurs.

Youtube a sorti ses stories pour éviter de perdre des influenceurs au profit d’Instagram. Amazon les séduit avec un programme d’affiliation avantageux en leur proposant notamment de la data pour optimiser leur ventes.

Les influenceurs disposent d’une audience engagée. Comment l’ont-ils obtenue ? En offrant un contenu de qualité, pertinent et un bon storytelling.

Mon meilleur pote bouffe du code  

Aujourd’hui, je travaille avec un geek sur le blog de Videotelling. Il s’appelle Dominique. C’est lui qui m’a enseigné les bases du SEO. Il m’a aussi fait découvrir des sites cools comme answerthepublic.com.

Dom m’a très souvent tiré des méandres du code. C’est lui qui a réalisé l’architecture de mon nouveau blog : papastories.fr. Bref, sans lui je serai un peu paumé.

Qui sait ce qu’un geek et un rat de bibliothèque peuvent faire ensemble ?

Nous avons une fascination pour la technologie. C’est compréhensible. Les voitures autonomes, les casques de réalité virtuelle, les chatbots qui vendent des assurances… c’est impressionnant.

Mais ce que je tente de dire, c’est que le contenant a besoin de contenu. Et vice versa.

Au lieu de les opposer, il faudrait plutôt célébrer l’alliance :

  • du copywriter et du webmaster
  • du data scientist et du directeur artistique
  • du visionnaire et de l’ingénieur
  • du poète et du financier

Moi, littéraire, devenu seigneur dans le monde digital

Je me suis réveillé un jour en prenant conscience que ce que je faisais avait de la valeur. J’ai animé un blog et mes articles ont ramené des clients à mon entreprise ! Je me suis rendu compte que Baudelaire avait raison quand il disait : “Tout homme bien portant peut se passer de manger pendant deux jours, — de poésie, jamais ?”

Ni les GAFA, ni le CAC 40 ne peuvent non plus se passer de littérature et de poésie. Je suis intimement convaincu que la vraie disruption dans le marketing digital n’est pas technologique. Elle vient de l’écrit. Elle est poétique !
